Growing up with albinism, it hasn’t always been easy for Christine (@signedivory) to embrace her unique look. She describes the pain that came from being othered - too white to be black and too black to be white. Now, Christine regards her albinism as a super power and celebrates her individualistic beauty.

I entered the Find Me Unique competition because…

I’ve been really working on my self acceptance, and embracing all parts of who I am. A large part of that is my experience growing up with albinism. I hoped I could use this as an opportunity to share and hopefully, educate others.

In Tanzania, people with albinism are seen as a punishment to their families. Some believe that they are mystical creatures and their blood can be used for healing or money rituals. 

For me, unique beauty means…

Accepting the things that make you, you. The quirks, the features that you try to hide...embrace it all. Your difference is where your power is.

I embrace my unique look by...

Trying new and daring looks. Red, blonde, black, bald - my hair has seen it all! I’m a chameleon. I used to try and suppress this so I could fit in, but that’s boring.

If I could speak to my younger self…

I would say: you were born different, for a difference. Although you may not understand what that difference is, the fun is in exploring through trial and error. Own it, with no regrets. Oh, and leave your eyebrows alone!

My favourite words to live by are…

‘Feel the fear, and do it anyway.’

I love Christmas because…

It's that one time of the year when everyone gets to switch off and just be with family. I love that because of social media, you get a glimpse at how similar, yet different, all of our families really are!

Top of my Christmas list this year...

I have my eye on a few fragrances, but I would love an Apple Pen - I really want to get back into drawing.
